September 2, 2006: The Vegetarian Nirvana Cafe

Taking full advantage of the cultural delights that Melbourne has to offer, we decided to spend our Saturday at a suburban shopping centre trying to buy a vacuum cleaner. The Melbourne weather has been amazing since we moved down, with day after day of sunny blue skies and low twenties temperatures, so we chose to walk half the way to Richmond, via the Carlton Gardens (where I’ve been eating lunch during the working week).

Thankfully, the shopping centre wasn’t really that suburban and we were left with a wide range of lunch options in the surrounding streets. In particular, the winner of the Age Cheap Eats guide vegetarian dish of the year award was just around the corner. So with the heavy load of our new vacuum, we wandered down to the Vegetarian Nirvana Café to sample the vegetarian Indian menu.

The lunch special (two curries and rice for $6 each) was too good a deal to pass up, so we relegated the dish of the year (Navratan Kofta Balls) to a future visit. The curries on offer were: kofta (but not the Navratan kind), dhal, chickpea curry and a mixed vege curry. It was all fairly tasty and excellent value, but nothing from the hotbox gave me the impression that this was a ‘dish of the year’ place. We’ll have to go back and order off the menu just to see if it lives up to the hype.
